We run a number of wekend and wwek long camps each year for scouts and for cubs. In addition to traditional winter, summer camps the scouts attend the annual RN sea scouts camp in Gosport on one of the Naval bases and an offshore sailing expediton in conjunction with 36th EFS Sea Scout Group and Discovery Sailing Project near Southampton. Some cubs attend a Sixers camp which runs over a weekend. We also run an annual Chief Scout Gold Award camp and an overnight stay as part of a weekend outing at the end of the winter term that involves Scouts, and Cubs often in conjunction with the 36th EFS group.

A few weeks before the camp you will receive a ‘Parents Information’ letter that will provide all the arrangements for that camp and a detailed kit list.  You can take a look at this FAQs document that sets out some of our standard conditions and provides a generic kit list. However, when packing for any camp you MUST refer to the list for that camp as it may differ.

Winter Camp

Winter camp runs over a weekend in February and the cubs and scouts sleep in cabins or other indoor accommodation in groups of 4-6. The daytime is a mix of orienteering or geocaching and other scout skills, higher adrenaline activites on the assult course, climbing and working at heights. Since Febriary evenings that are good for camp fire are rare, the Saturday evening is always a themed evening that incorporates dinner such as the Vegas Casino night, American diner and 4th EFS dance-off, normally involving fancy dress, games and diner style food service.

Summer Camp

Summer camp is under canvas and attended by scouts either in traditional patrol tents or modern nylon tents (weather forecast depending) which they put up themselves on arrival and take down when we break camp. The location is on a three year rotation between our campsite in Norfolk, The Brecpon Beacons and The New Forest and the actviity theme varies according to the site and local facilities and geography. The camp is more chilled than the winter camp due to the longer duration and there is time left for the scouts to hangout, practice their outdoor skills and relax. Each day is organised around a common pattern. Central cooking is mostly now on fire with gas as backup and is done by the duty patrols which rotate to cover cooking and other camp duties.

RN Camp

As RN Scout Group number 5, we attend an annual RN Scout camp in the summer term which is operated by the Admiral Nelson Unit for RN Recognized Sea Scouts based on one of the Naval bases in Portsmputh or Gosport. Camp lasts a week and the scouts get to try out powerboating, paddling, sailing, yachting, raft building, robot building and orienteering. During the week, scouts from all the participating groups are mixed into camp units and our scouts find themselves in a unit with perhaps only one existing scout colleague and over the week make many new friends from accross the year, these freiendships lasting for some well beyond university.

Offshore Sailing

This is a weekend trip in May using the two yachts owned by Discovery Sailing Project; Thermopylae and Discovery. The yachts between them accomodate 16 scouts adn the trips run from Friday evening till Sunday afternoon with the opportunity from time to time for more seasoned scouts demonstrating a good level of aptitude to be invited bacl as Watch leaders for other trips.
